Provide Interns to Assist HPTC with Architectural Assessments at MALU

Description

The objective of this project is to support and stimulate work, promote education and training opportunities for young adults through collaborative participation in the stewardship of cultural resources. The purpose of this GYF Internship Program is to introduce young adults to Historic Preservation work in a carefully supervised environment. The work completed through this agreement will be in service to public lands to be utilized and enjoyed for current and future generations. The HPTC is dedicated to the preservation and maintenance of the historic buildings, structures and features of the NPS and its partners. The HPTC executes this commitment by demonstrating outstanding leadership through field preservation schooling for basic hands-on craft skills development in masonry, carpentry, woodcrafting, and architectural building identification, evaluation and condition assessment techniques. The HPTC utilizes the historic preservation projects as its main instrument for teaching preservation philosophy and progressive development of building crafts knowledge, exposure to the newest stabilization practices, techniques and applications, and enriching project management skills. This project teamwork approach with qualified trade specialists assures flexibility in addressing the unknown and unidentified conditions during both simple and complex preservation projects and ensures that the goals of the preservation projects are achieved and completed. This internship will provide young adults with experience in conducting condition assessments on historic structures on the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta, GA. HPTC will provide training in the methodology of preparing Historic Structures Report to NPS standards. This includes researching the history of the building, "reading" the historic fabric to determine the chronology of evolution of the structure, assess the condition of the building and its component features, and determine the recommended treatment based on NPS policy and guidelines (Cultural Resources Management Guidelines) as well as The Secretary on the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. As part of assessing the building(s), interns will work with HPTC staff to document the as-found condition with architectural measured drawings. This includes measuring with hand tools and with laser measuring devices, creating field sketches of the buildings to record dimensions, and delineation of a suite of architectural measured drawings according to NPS standards (Guideline for Preparation of Design and Construction Drawings) in AutoCAD. In addition, interns will work with HPTC staff to create six HSRs including writing, revising, photo-editing and captioning, formatting, and production.
